Travelling north

We exercised our Oyster Cards on Tuesday and took a train trip up to Newcastle.

Because we are old, we can go anywhere on the trains for $2.50 a day, so the 2 1/2-hour trip to Newcastle is a bargain. The train is comfortable and the views are splendid as the route goes up north of Sydney then plunges down to cross the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn.

Newcastle is regarded as a bit dowdy, but we had fun. There are a couple of great beaches right by the city centre and lots of smart cafes and restaurants near the water. The town has some interesting old buildings, some of them a bit run down.

The baths look posh . . .

There’s plenty of building work going on, so the city is transforming itself.

We had a walk along the beaches watching the pelicans and the surfers. There were lots of smaller birds diving into the shallows after the fish there.

After a cafe lunch we wandered down the main shopping street and then had a look at the wharf side area.

There’s lots of history in Newcastle but a lot of it seemed to concern criminals and locking them up for a long time!

Shiny new toy – vroom vroom

We had a bit of fun on Sunday test-driving the new Mazda MX-5 sports car at its launch in Sydney. It’s a lovely little machine, plenty of power from a modest-sized engine and fabulous ride and handling. I also think it’s a very good-looking car.mx5mx5-2

Jan’s MX-5 is now eight years old, so she’s thinking about updating.  She also liked the new car a lot, so we’ll see what happens. Of course the colour we like – Soul red Metallic – comes at extra cost (sigh!).

Jan might also wait until the 2-litre model arrives at the end of the year. It has a bit more power for not much more money.

The old car is still going very well. Jan just had some parking damage fixed and the whole car detailed and it looks really good. I still love driving around in an open sports car.

Balmy at Palmie

Lovely winter’s day today – 24 degrees. The forecast was good so we headed off to Palm beach in the sports car. We started off in jeans, but when we got there we changed into shorts – very brave. There were plenty of people in the sea (mostly wearing wetsuits) but we weren’t that brave.

Not a dolphin

We had a coffee from a kiosk outside the boathouse cafe on Pittwater. The cafe used to be a lovely slightly daggy old place but has now gone upmarket. Lots more tables, lots of young waitresses dashing about and a longish queue – it was packed to the rafters. We’ll have to try it on a weekday.

We took a stroll along the beach and watched the surfers make the best of some small waves. A pod of dolphins made an appearance.

Lunch was flathead and chips from our favourite Palm Beach chippery, eaten sitting on the grass watching the boats go up and down Pittwater. On the way back we stopped for another beach stroll at Bilgola, then home with the top down on the car. Good day.

Farewell to Ripley

Posted on by John

Sad news, I’m afraid. Ripley has gone. He was fine until a few days ago when he started going off his food. Then he was breathing very heavily. I took him to the vet who did some X-rays and said he had pleural effusion – lots of fluid in his chest. It could be caused by an infection, a cancer, or his heart (Maine Coons are known to be prone to Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.) ripleysmaller

The vet suggested more tests at the local animal hospital. I took him along and they found some lumps in his abdomen. After some ultrasounds the hospital vet diagnosed lymphoma. The cancer was advanced and had spread. The prognosis was not good, so we said goodbye to the boy. He’d lasted 10 years, not too bad for a Maine.

He was a great cat and very handsome. We’ll miss him. Sooty now has the house to herself and seems to be enjoying it.

Cheers!

Jan’s been travelling a fair bit – to Fiji recently. Each time she returns from the airport with a couple of bottles of duty-free gin. Even with a high rate of consumption, the gin collection is growing. Here’s a picture. Pop round for a G&T some time and help reduce the gin lake!

Jan's gin collection.
