Tap, tap, tap, tap – it must be Jan!

Jan’s walking is improving day by day, aided by the crutches. She’s easing herself off the painkillers and she’s sleeping well. All good progress for  nearly two weeks after her hip replacement.

We had brunch down by the Parramatta River on Thursday. Jan managed getting into and out of the car with no problems, and we had a (slow) walk around the area. She’s still not confident enough to try a crowded restaurant, so we stayed home for our regular Friday night meeting with the Jones’s. We had takeaway from out favourite Thai restaurant and enjoyed a little civilised background music – Mozart.

Otherwise, I’ve been coping with the cooking (on top of all the other chores, of course) under strict supervision. The only snag so far (apart from the lack of snags, he he) is when it came to the fennel salad that accompanied our grilled pork chops with caramelised onions and honey sauce.

All was going well with slicing the fennel thinly using a mandolin. This was my first time using this particular machine and (I expect you’ve guessed this already . . .) I managed to slice a bit off the top of my right thumb. It was very painful, but I didn’t make a fuss, just staunched the gushing blood and stuck everything back together with a couple of band-aids. Like a thorough professional, I managed to keep blood and human flesh away from the food.

Unlike Jan, I’m managing so far without painkillers. So brave!

Back on the net

Hurrah! We’re back on the internet. We were 10 days without contact after a huge tree branch fell onto the Bigpond broadband cable that connects our house to the street pole opposite.

It took a fair bit of phoning Telstra and complaining to get anything done. We were able to get our emails and connect to the internet via our mobile phones, but that was burning up our data allowance very quickly. After one more insistent complaint, Telstra said I could buy a wifi hotspot that connected via the mobile phone network – and they would reimburse me!

I rushed off to the Telstra shop and bought a Netgear Aircard for $109. It worked really well from the start, getting a good phone signal and broadcasting fast wifi through the house.

The day after, two guys came, strung a new cable across the street and reconnected us to the world. No charge – act of nature.

The wifi hotspot will come in handy when we stay in faraway seaside places that have no internet and poor phone coverage. And it was free! But still little recompense for our 10 days without internet and without our Foxtel pay TV. We have Foxtel working now – just in time to watch live coverage of the Australia v India cricket test match in Poona.

BUT WAIT  . . . .

There’s more free tech. My Apple Watch is almost two years old and a couple of weeks ago the microphone stopped working. Siri completely ignored me! I couldn’t answer phone calls from my wrist any more. Sigh!

Anyway, I checked my warranty and (unusually for me) I’d bought the AppleCare extra warranty when I bought the watch. This entitled me to ask for a replacement – which I did. They sent me a brand new watch, which arrived two days later, and I sent back the old one. New watch, no charge. Good onya, Apple. Let’s hope it lasts longer than two years this time!

Home again

Jan’s back home! She was discharged from the hospital this morning after an ultrasound to check she had no clots in her legs. We had a bit of a wait to get a prescription for some endone painkillers, but then we were free.

It was market day in the hospital grounds so I took the opportunity to buy some char kwai teow from one of the excellent food stalls for dinner tonight.

Jan needs a good upright chair with strong arms so she can push herself up without having to lean forward too much.  Chris came to the rescue and loaned Jan his special reading chair from his den. Big sacrifice. Usually nobody’s allowed to touch anything in Chris’s den. Respect.

Jan’s getting along well on crutches. However, the tap-tap-tap noise means she can’t sneak up on anyone. I have to put on her special compression socks but she can manage most other things by herself. Sooty is pleased to have two people back in the house again.

One small step for a woman

Jan’s up and walking on crutches. She’s made good progress. She’s now dressed, sitting in a chair (rather than in bed) and wandering the hospital corridors. There’s a little pain, so she’s still on Endone (oxycodone) to stay comfortable.

They should be sending her home tomorrow with a set of crutches, a shower seat, a pickup stick and a dressing stick. I’ll pick her up, then she’ll be in my gentle caring hands. If she doesn’t behave I can withhold her painkillers!

Bionic woman walks!

Viv and Chris visited her today and Chris took this picture of her making use of her crutches.

At home we still have no internet – so this is via my iphone data linked up to my Mac. Seems to be working ok so far with a good 4g signal here. The Telstra man came to examine the damage. It was raining – so he made it clear “I can’t do any work in the rain”.

The internet cable shares a spot on the power line poles so the Telstra men are not allowed to work on wet poles just in case. Anyway, he said, “This’ll need a bucket truck and a crew to sort out.” So maybe, fingers crossed, we’ll see a bucket truck on Friday.

Hip hip hooray!

Jan’s hip operation at Concord General Hospital this morning went well and she’s already getting some physiotherapy. She was cheerful – she had a spinal anaesthetic for the op and was feeling only a little pain when I was there.

The patient.

She had lots of tubes going in and out, of course, including some oxygen and a saline drip. There were also some neat socks with a pump attached.

The surgeon, Dr Bernard Zicat,  had been to see her and said all went well (but he would say that, wouldn’t he!) He has a very smart website here, so he must be good.

She’s due to come out on Thursday morning into the care of ME. Full recovery may take three months. I’ll have to hide the gin.
