Tap, tap, tap, tap – it must be Jan!

Jan’s walking is improving day by day, aided by the crutches. She’s easing herself off the painkillers and she’s sleeping well. All good progress for  nearly two weeks after her hip replacement.

We had brunch down by the Parramatta River on Thursday. Jan managed getting into and out of the car with no problems, and we had a (slow) walk around the area. She’s still not confident enough to try a crowded restaurant, so we stayed home for our regular Friday night meeting with the Jones’s. We had takeaway from out favourite Thai restaurant and enjoyed a little civilised background music – Mozart.

Otherwise, I’ve been coping with the cooking (on top of all the other chores, of course) under strict supervision. The only snag so far (apart from the lack of snags, he he) is when it came to the fennel salad that accompanied our grilled pork chops with caramelised onions and honey sauce.

All was going well with slicing the fennel thinly using a mandolin. This was my first time using this particular machine and (I expect you’ve guessed this already . . .) I managed to slice a bit off the top of my right thumb. It was very painful, but I didn’t make a fuss, just staunched the gushing blood and stuck everything back together with a couple of band-aids. Like a thorough professional, I managed to keep blood and human flesh away from the food.

Unlike Jan, I’m managing so far without painkillers. So brave!

  1. Jan says:

John omitted to say that slicing the top off your thumb and having to stick it together with band aids plays havoc with the thumb print ID on your iPhone.

Fennel salad was very good though!

Better watch out that the thumb print fairy doesn’t hack into your iPhone, John.

Glad to hear you are on the mend, Jan, and that John is literally shedding blood to aid the recovery; though it sounds as if you might end up being the carer before long !

    Take care both of you.
