New Year’s Eve is a blast. I have to work escorting a Sydney Morning Herald photographer at the Mayor’s Children’s picnic in the Botanic Gardens. My reward is an invitation for Jan and I to the Lord Mayor’s Party. The party is on the Opera House forecourt with a flash marquee, live entertainment, dancing and plenty of food and booze. Must be the best place in Sydney from which to gaze at the fireworks. Despite a bit of world-weariness about fireworks, these really are spectacular. Party fantastic, there is a bus to take us home afterwards. We get home at 5am and it takes us while to recover.
