Going to blazes

I drove to the model flying field this Saturday keen for a fly – only to find the long grass surrounding our mowed runways was on fire! The fire had started just moments before I arrived. The fliers there said there had been a trail bike (illegally) riding through the area just before the fire started. Very suspicious.

The blaze spread rapidly. The bushfire brigade turned up about 30 minutes after someone called 000 and they put out the fire near where the cars were parked. Elsewhere, they encouraged the fire to spread to burn off the long grasses.

The start of the grass fire

I went home and left them to it. I went back on Sunday and flew my models. The landing strips were untouched but the rest of the field was black ash.

It was a windy day but I managed to avoid getting covered in ash! My Extra 300 model now has had 272 flights.

Canberra culture

Another cool clear day in Canberra. We had a fab time at the National Museum – an amazing building. Then more culture at the National Gallery and the Portrait Gallery. We took some pix in the sculpture garden outside the gallery.

Chris, Jan and Ray with a shiny sculpture.

After the culture we headed for the Wig and Pen. A friend of Chris who was a real ale fan had taken her there before and she made us go, honest.

Jan and I had a pint of their finest local brew (Chris and Ray had a half) and it was lovely! The pub was a shopfront, but inside was proper pub – wooden tables and chairs, no music, no televisions. We had a lovely meal out that night. Then Sunday morning we went to a market at the old Bus depot which was fun (lots of earrings). We said our goodbyes and headed for home via Bowral and the Elephant Boy cafe.

Canberra Times

In front of the War Memorial with Parliament House in the distance.

We’re in Canberra staying with Chris and Ray Sloane. Cold but clear weather – there was frost on the car this morning!

Brrrrr!

We went to the War Memorial and had a lovely time looking at lots of old aeroplanes and tanks and similar things. The Lancaster G-George display was splendid.

Then we popped up to the Telstra tower on Black mountain to have a look at the city from 850 meters above sea level.

Here’s a picture of Jan and Ray in a chilly breeze on the observation deck.
Tomorrow, the National Museum.

Thar she blows!

We went watching for whales today. It was a lovely clear winter’s day in Sydney, a crisp 18 degrees and you could see for miles. We drove out to Manly and the North Head lookout. Fantastic views of Sydney harbour and out over the sea to the north and south.

We took the binoculars and studied the waters carefully. There were some whale-watching boats to the north and we could see some splashes in the water near them and we reckoned that was definitely a whale.

July is peak time for whale-spotting as the humpbacks head north from the Antarctic to warmer waters for breeding. They usually hug the Australian coast on the way.

We went for a coffee and came back later for another look, this time down to the south. We spotted some action way in the distance. I saw three whale spouts near boats – “Thar she blows!” I cried – but couldn’t see the actual whale. Never mind. So it wasn’t really a whale-watching day, more of a whale-spotting day. We’ll have to go on a whale-watching boat if we want a closer look. Splendid day nonetheless, topped off by a lunch of flathead and chips in a Manly cafe.

Phoenix rises from the crashes

Oops! Big moment with my big model plane. I’m showing off by flying very low inverted and I get disorientated and hit the ground in a vertical dive. Pilot error! Luckily the long grass at the field takes some of the sting out of the impact.

I carry the remains back to the pits and get some consolation from my fellow flyers.

The wings and tail survive, but alas, the fuselage is broken in two and the cowl and canopy have multiple contusions. But 10 days later (today) she flies again! It took a lot of work to piece together and strengthen the fuselage, then re-cover it with film.

I bought a new cowl and canopy. The old ones were repairable but they would have shown the scars.  I also needed a new propeller and spinner. Worth the effort as this is a lovely plane to fly.

I was very careful to make sure the fuselage was straight when I glued it back together. It certainly flies straight and true.
