Getting better

The Tuscany picture is back in all its glory. The fiddling is working. Now to get down to some serious blogging and to make some photos available here.

Still fiddling

Still fiddling with my site to get all the images to appear properly when you log on to it. I did have a wonderful pic of Tuscany at the head of the page but it disappeared (the image, not Tuscany!) So I have returned to a stock sunset image. That’ll have to do for now.

Hello everyone!

Hi, just getting started with this locally-hosted blog. Instead of being on the Blogger website, this is on my own site hosted on a network drive at home. We’ll see how this all works out!

Update – not working out very well at the moment. Looks lovely from my home PC but drops all its fancy layout when viewed from a foreign PC. Sigh! Must persevere.

Above is a shot of dawn over Montepulciano. Ah! I cannot forget that Tuscan holiday.

Life firsts

Two firsts yesterday – my first Pilates session and (after 23 years in this city) my first ride in a Sydney bus.
The Pilates, a free lunchtime session for Council staff, was a lot rougher and tougher than I imagined. There was some strenuous work on “core strength” – known as that because when going from a downward dog to a plank you tend to exclaim “Cor, that hurts!”
I left with wobbly legs and a slight dizzy feeling which I do not think was euphoria. I might try it again.
The bus was to get from work to Newtown to meet Jan and some friends, Tristan and Amanda, for dinner. The train station wasn’t anywhere near the restaurant so I asked my colleagues about bus routes and they gave me lots of helpful tips. I went to the right place and asked a bus driver who wasn’t going to the right bit of Newtown but told me which bus to catch. The bus was fine, smooth, comfortable, but brought me into uncomfortably close proximity to common people and scruffy students. Damn! I should have brought some hand sanitiser to protect me from their germs. I left the dinner with a slight dizzy feeling which I do not think was euphoria and probably something to do with alcohol. Caught a taxi home.

Cake Fairy to the Rescue

I blame the oven. Margaret Fulton’s chocolate cake sounded good when it came to my turn to bake for the City of Sydney Media and Comms Unit Friday morning tea. But this was only my second cake-baking attempt in 62 years and it didn’t quite go to plan. If Jan hadn’t been out at her book club that evening she might have alerted me to the tell-tale signs – such as the smell of burning. But I wanted to make sure the cake was baked all through. It was, but it was also burnt black on the outside. Damn! I cut off the burnt bits. Now the formerly round cake was hexagonal – but it tasted good so I took it into work. Luckily one of my colleagues (Amy) is a Cake Fairy. She advised me to buy some ricotta and smooth it around the outside of the cake to cover up the chopped-off bits. Then she sprinkled fairy dust over the top! (Well, icing sugar). It was a triumph. The Cake Fairy saved my life.
