We talk to the animals

It has been lovely winter weather in Sydney, ideal for a visit to Taronga Zoo. We went last Friday, avoiding the school holiday crowds and had a great time. We went by train from home to Circular Quay and caught the ferry over the harbour – the usual glistening water, clear blue skies, the Bridge, the Opera House etc.

We haven’t been to the zoo for years. It’s a great spot, on the slopes of the harbour diagonally opposite the Opera House. It’s said that the giraffes have the most expensive views in Sydney – but they deserve it, they are lovely creatures.

The lemurs were terrific too – just look at them! We were a bit disappointed by the meercats – they were lovely but there were only three of them on display. Maybe the rest were hiding underground.

The big cats were variable. The tigers hid away at the back of the enclosure, but the lions seemed to enjoy the attention.

The chimps were entertaining but a bit aggressive. I think they should bring back the chimps’ tea party!

We saw a bird show. It wasn’t the full deal, just a minor rehearsal but it was still amazing with parrots and raptors zooming just over our heads. A galah was trained to take a coin from the hand of a spectator and deliver it to his handler – he then took it back to the spectator, of course. Lots of fun.
